Bike Sport Lippe meets rwanda cycling team

2006 gründete Bikelegende Tom Ritchey das „Projekt Ruanda“, das die Fahrradförderung und Verbreitung in dem bergigen, kleinen afrikanischen Land zum Ziel hat. Es wurden besonders stabile und wartungsfreundliche Transporträder angeboten (siehe Foto). Auch wenn der Autoverkehr stark zugenommen hat, befördern die einfachen Menschen doch häufig große Lasten (z.B. Wasserkanister, landwirtschaftliche Erzeugnisse für den Markt, Brennholz, Baumaterial,...) zu Fuß, teilweise auf dem Kopf.  Hier sind die Transporträder eine große Hilfe und bedeuten Zeitersparnis auf den langen Wegen. Außerdem bieten sie eine zusätzliche Verdienstmöglichkeit.

Bis 2010 war das „Rwanda cycling team“ in dem Projekt integriert. Die ersten Fahrer waren Single-Speed-Fahrradtaxifahrer, heute ist das Team professionell aufgestellt und es nehmen Fahrer bei Olympia in London, beim cape epic und anderen Afrikaevents teil. Es wird hauptsächlich Rennrad gefahren, beim cape epic auch Mountainbike. Im Herbst findet ein großes, 8-tägiges Etappenrennen „Tour across Rwanda“ statt.

Auf einer Besuchsreise durch Ruanda hatte ich kürzlich die Möglichkeit einige Teammitglieder an ihrem Standort Musanze im Norden des Landes persönlich kennen zu lernen. Auf dem Foto sind die Fahrer Abraham Ruhumuriza (mehrfacher Gewinner der Ruanda-Rundfahrt), Valenz Ndayisenga, und der Mechaniker Rafiki Uwimana mit seinem Sohn Jonathan zu sehen. Als Gastgeschenk habe ich ein bsl-Trikot überreicht, so dass unser Verein nun auch in Afrika präsent ist.

Das Team wird gemanagt von den Amerikanern Kimberly Coats (Marketing/Logistik) und Jock Boyer (Trainer), außerdem arbeiten noch Volunteers aus Frankreich (Jimmy Lacroix als Mechaniker) und aus USA ( Travis Nicks als Cotrainer) mit. Die Fahrer werden auch in ihrer schulischen und beruflichen Entwicklung gefördert, z.B. erhalten alle Englischunterricht, die Sprache, die seit 2002 das französische als offizielle Verkehrsprache abgelöst hat.

and for the friends in Ruanda all in english

In 2006 Tom Ritchey founded the „Projekt Rwanda“, that has the aim to grow up the using of bikes in the small african country with the „1000 hills“. They offer transportbikes, that are strong and easy to repair (see foto). Although the traffic has grown a lot, normal people often transport heavy things like waterboxes, wood for buildings, aricultural products,... by foot, often above their head. The transportbikes mean a great help and a further income.

Up to 2010 the „Rwanda cycling Team“ was part of the projekt. The first riders were single-speed-biketaxi-drivers, today it is a professional team. The drivers started at the Olympic games in London, at the cape epic race and other african events. They primarily race road, for the Cape epic also mountainbike . In this autumn there will be an 8 days lasting stage race across Rwanda.

During a visit to Rwanda I had the chance to meet some of the teammembers at their place in Musanze in the North of the country. On the photo you can see the riders Abraham Ruhumuriza, Valenz Ndayisenga, and the  mechanic Rafiki Uwimana with his son Jonathan. As a gift I brought a tricot of our club „bike sport lippe“, so that we are present in Africa now.

The team is run by the Americans Kimberly Coats (marketing/logistics) and  Jock Boyer (Trainer), supported by a volunteer from France (Jimmy Lacroix as mechanic) and an american assistant trainer ( Travis Nicks). The riders are supported in their educational and profession developement, for example they learn english, the language that is officially spoken in Rwanda.
